There is something special about receiving a handwritten note, especially in today’s world of electronic messages. They are welcome bits of civility in an often less than civil world. Most people are aware that social courtesy requires them to write thank you notes after receiving gifts for major occasions such as graduations, showers, and weddings. Albeit, not everyone sends thank you notes, but, at least I like to believe, they are still aware of the the fact. A lesser known use for the thank you note, and one that definitely speaks volumes to the receiver, is the “above-and-beyond” thank you note. It is written when someone does something special or out of the ordinary — the ballet instructor or band director who is responsible for a recital, the colleague who refers a new client to you, the soloist at church who did an exceptional job, the paper carrier who always has the paper on your door step before 7AM, or the person with whom you had a stimulating conversation. The fact is, when people invest in others or brighten their day, it often goes unrewarded. Granted, no one should expect a thank-you note for every act of kindness or job well done. However, when a deed causes one to stop and reflect, a thank-you note is in order and, because it is so rarely done, the note itself will become a cherished random act of kindness.
