Building a Classic Wardrobe One Piece at a Time — the Black Sleeveless Dress

LBD for Work and Play

sixth in a series

Every woman’s wardrobe needs a classic little black dress.  It can be dressy, casual, business-like, or dinner-ready simply by changing the accessories.  A simple, sleeveless black dress is the perfect next piece to add to the classic wardrobe.  It can be worn as is, with the cardigan from the twinset or the tweed blazer, netting three very different looks that can go from day to night without missing a beat.

The first thing that must be determined before buying any dress is your body shape, then you will know what style of dress works best for you.

1.  If there is little difference between your bust measurement and your hip measurement and your waist is undefined, you have a straight body shape and your best choices are A-lines, empire waists, and shifts.

2.  If you are fuller through the hips and the rear and smaller on top, you have a pear shape and should look for A-line and empire-waisted dresses.

3  Hourglass shapes have a full bust, defined waist, and full hips and look best wearing sheaths and wraps.

4.  If your narrowest point is above your natural waist at the ribs, you have an apple shape and should wear dresses with empire waists and shifts.

5.  If your bust measurement is bigger than your hip measurement, your shape is called a full bust shape.  A-lines, halters and wraps are your best choices.

Once you determine the style of dress, check the:

  • Seams — make sure they are evenly stitched, no broken stitches, and have relatively tight stitching.  Remember that the higher the stitches per inch, the better the quality.  Seams should be either serged or double stitched to make them stronger.
  • Lining — a lined dress is usually of better quality than one that is not.  The lining helps the dress to easily slip on.  Also, check for interfacing around sleeve holes, necklines, buttons and zipper areas.  The facing adds durability in high-use areas.
  • Fabric — natural is better than synthetic and, unfortunately, getting harder and harder to find.  Natural fabrics such as wool, cotton, silk, and linen are superior to nylon, acetate, and polyester.  Garments constructed from natural fabrics will last longer than garments that are not.

The Fall 2012 Classics — Alice & Olivia

After looking at the Jil Sander’s Fall 2012 Collection with its beautiful pastels, it was hard looking at the over abundance of  blacks and browns that many designers brought to the runway for Fall 2012.  It all seemed a bit too heavy.  Then I came across the Alice & Olivia collection and it was like a breath of fresh air.   Stacey Bendet, the designer for Alice & Olivia, created an often times fun and whimsical look that included classic pieces with a modern twist.  I’ve chosen some of my favorite classic looks with a few “anything but classic” ensembles to remind us that fall can be, and should be, about having fun!!

The Alice & Olivia Look for the Fall Classics:

  • The Look:  Strong, sexy, playful
  • The Details: Mixing patterns and prints such as the gold sequin shift dress paired with a red knit sweater and fur collar, and the brown leather bomber jacket worn with the floor-length green sequin gown.
  • The Colors:  Black and white, emerald, ruby, red and purple
  • The One Classic Piece to Buy:  Sequin party dress
  • The Accessories: Platform loafers and geometrically sculpted heels

Classic Interiors — The Country Cottage

I’m not sure what fascinates me more — clothing design or interior decorating.  They actually go hand-in-hand — they both share the simple desire to surround ourselves with beauty.  This week, perhaps due to Ralph Lauren’s fabulous Fall Collection inspired by the English countryside and the Jil Sander’s Collection showcasing all those marvelous shades of pink for fall, I find myself wanting to be surrounded by the country cottage look.  A look that is a relaxed, yet romantic and inspired by the colors found in nature — soft pinks, pale blues, shades of green, sprinkled with bits of sunshine yellow. The country cottage look brings the outdoors inside by using fresh floral arrangements, botanical prints, distressed garden furniture, light and airy window treatments, and lots of fabric.  Together, the individual design elements form one cohesive look — country elegance.

The Classic Style of Charlotte Casiraghi

She is an accomplished equestrian, the new face of Gucci, the daughter of Princess Caroline of Monaco and the granddaughter of Grace Kelly.  Need I say more?  At 25, Charlotte Casiraghi is many things including rich and beautiful.  However, she has something that money or pedigree can not buy — a sense of grace and style.  Sure, being raised around high fashion has its privileges, but again, it does not guarantee that one knows what to do with it.  Charlotte not only knows what to do with it, but she does it well.

A Day in the Life …. the Ann Arbor Art Fair

The middle of July, Ann Arbor, Michigan, comes alive with the annual Art Fair.  The streets of downtown Ann Arbor and the campus of the University of Michigan shut down and are transformed into stages for artists all over the country to display their wares.  Oil paintings, photography exhibits, metal sculptures, pottery and everything in between is there.  My daughter and I ventured into the streets of Ann Arbor and enjoyed the sites and sounds (and a bit of food) of creative energy coming together at one spot in one moment in time.
