Building A Classic Wardrobe One Piece at a Time — Dress Slacks

second in a series

After purchasing a white button down shirt, the next item to add to a classic wardrobe is a pair of black dress slacks. The important things to keep in mind when buying slacks are fit, fabric, and comfort.  Few women would disagree that finding the perfect pair of slacks is a time-consuming job.  Numerous pairs may need to be tried on before finding the ones that fit properly.  However, once you find a pair that you like, write down, memorize, or otherwise etch in stone the name of the store, the brand, and the style.  Then when you need another pair, you’ll know exactly where to go :)   Time spent now will be time saved later. Also, keep in mind that almost perfect slacks can become totally perfect with the help of a seamstress.

The Requirements for Dress Slacks

Waist Fit:  Keep it comfortable — nothing too tight, nothing too loose.

Waistband Position:  Above the high hip and below the naval is a good look.  Also, the waistband should form a circle that is parallel to the ground — no dips in the front or in back when standing.

Cut:  As a rule, a looser cut is preferable for dress slacks.

Rise Length:  Avoid slacks that are too long or too short in the crotch.  The correct fit is important to the overall look of the slacks.

Length:  The slacks should almost skim the ground.  In other words, the top of the shoes should just barely be seen.

Comfort:  Sit down in a chair while wearing the slacks.  They should not feel snug anywhere.

Fabric:  Avoid fabrics that wrinkle.  Spandex helps cotton and linen not wrinkle and also has the added benefit of enhancing the general fit.  Wool and polyester slacks should be lined.
