The Fall 2012 Classics — Jil Sander

For five years Jil Sander designed clothes for her Hamburg, Germany, boutique.  Then, in 1973, she took Milan by storm and introduced her ready-to-wear clothing line. Her simplistic take on luxe fashions soon transformed the designer label of Jil Sander into a $200 million business. In 1999, Prada became majority owner of the label and many changes have followed.  Sander left, come back, and left the company again.  In 2005, Raf Simon became the new creative director and proved himself collection after collection as he combined staying true to the origins of the Jil Sander line and infusing his own personality.   Life is a crazy thing, always changing and the design world is no different. Jil Sander is returning to the company she founded and, unfortunately, that means Raf Simon is departing.  The Fall RTW 2012 Collection, with its inspiration drawn from family relationships is his last for Jil Sander.  From the soft colors of early morning, clutched coats reminiscent of robes, to black leather ensembles signifying the end of another day, he captured the feeling of “a day in the life of”.  Although the sun may have set on Simon’s career at Jil Sander, a glowing new dawn surely is on his horizon.

I have to admit, from the first picture I saw of Simon’s collection, I was in awe.  The pinks, which I adore, seemed so gentle and inviting.  The coats reminded me of a by-gone romantic era , while the use of mixed media fascinated me.  I found myself calling to my daughter, “Come look at this” over and over again.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did :)

The Fall 2012 Classics — Ralph Lauren

With the Fourth of July behind us, the stores are already displaying their fall line-up of clothes.  On one hand, I don’t want to look because it still seems that summer has only just begun, but on the other hand, my curiosity implores me to gaze at the displays and, when I do, I start contemplating what I need — or at least what I think I need :)   However, before doing any serious shopping I like to survey what some of the finest designers in the world of classic styling have created for the upcoming season.

With that in mind, the first designer in The Fall 2012 Classics series is Ralph Lauren.  Imagine models strutting down the runway as the theme from Downton Abbey fills the room as you scroll through the following pictures and you can  create your own front row seat at Ralph Lauren’s Fall 2012 Runway Show.  For his Fall 2012 collection he draws his inspiration from the hit British show and the English countryside using a mix of classic, cozy fabrics in herringbone, tweed, and plaid to fashion garments that epitomize the marriage of vintage glamour and classic styling.  Avoiding anything that remotely resembles a costume, Lauren manages to create outfits that look equally well on the characters in the show or on the modern women of today.

The Ralph Lauren Look for the Fall Classics:

  • The Look:  Menswear and Vintage Glamour
  • The Details:  Beading and Elaborate Collars
  • The Colors:  Brown, Black, Fuchsia, and Gold
  • The One Classic Piece to Buy: Double-Breasted Tweed Jacket
  • The Accessories:  Cloches, Newsboy Caps, Doctor Bags, Leather Satchels, Platform Heels and Gloves
