The Look of Gloves

There is something so elegant about a woman wearing a pair of gloves, and, lucky for me, gloves top the list of some of the hottest accessories this season.  Apparently the fashion designers and I have something in common –  an affinity for those wonderful “above the elbow gloves” known as opera gloves.  For Fall 2012, runway models proved that leather opera gloves are more than a dose of old-fashioned femininity; they are bold statement pieces that can be paired just as easily with evening gowns as with pencil skirts.

It is here that I must deviate a little, because after looking at all of the gloves and the price tags that go with them, my “I can do that” attitude kicked in and I decided to make a few pairs of gloves to go with my fall wardrobe.  I promptly went out and bought several patterns, some nice stretchy material and then I sat down ready to create my works of art.  That was two weeks ago.  To date, I am still trying to attach the thumb to one of the gloves.  I have decided that I will probably get my best-selling novel written and published before I finish one pair of gloves.  That being said, I am now putting gloves on my wishlist, not my to-do list.

Here are some that I have been looking at:

ASOS Long Leather Gloves

I was beginning to think I would never find a pair of long black leather gloves for under $150.00, but finally I discovered this pair at ASOS.  Currently they are on sale for $63.32.

Dents Leather Long Gloves

Here is another pair from ASOS, a bit pricier at $209.32, but they are made from premium soft leather.  Guess it’s okay to dream a little :)

AGNELLE Pink Lamb Skin

Once I have my long black pair, I would like to add some color to my fall/winter wardrobe.  These pink gloves would certainly chase any of the winter blues away.  They also come in purple.  At $133.00 they may not be cheap, but I have learned that gloves are a lot more complicated than one might think.  Besides, anything as classic as a pair of gloves fashioned out of leather will never go out of style.

Diane Von Furstenberg

Saw these red opera gloves by Diane Von Furstenberg and just couldn’t resist.  Designer gloves at designer prices ($374), but they would be so perfect over the holidays … and then, of course, there is Valentine’s day … and I’m sure a wedding or two …

Pink Studded Long Leather Gloves

Okay, back to reality … what about these pink studded long leather gloves?  Definitely fun and definitely a smile bringer since they are currently on sale for  $99.99 (reg. $150.00)

Red Hearts Leather Gloves

Just the right amount of whimsical!

Leather All Over Stud Gloves

When a classic outfit needs a little bit of unexpected high fashion infusion, these gloves do the trick.   Trendy without breaking the bank.

That’s it for today, time to get back to the novel :)

The Style of Monaco’s Princess Charlene

Charlene, Princess of Monaco

Former South African Olympic swimmer Charlene Wittstock, Princess of Monaco, married Albert II, Prince of Monaco on July 1, 2011.  The media coverage of their wedding, in direct contrast to the love story of Kate Middleton and Prince William, revolved around rumors of a bride trying to run away before her wedding and a marriage based on a business deal to produce a legitimate heir rather than on love. Perhaps the rumors are true, perhaps they are not.  Chances are most of us will never know the truth, but the one thing that has emerged is that Charlene has an incredible sense of style. Although her fashion sense gets less coverage than the rumors surrounding her personal life, I would like to take a few minutes and focus not on Charlene, the wife of Albert II, but on Charlene, the woman who understands timeless fashion. Chances are she will long be remembered for her elegant dress sense rather than for tabloid  rumors.

Princess Charlene is truly a master of the monochromatic theme.  She looks ultra chic as she attends the Monaco National Day Celebrations on November 19, 2011, in Monaco, Monaco, wearing an Akris camel double-face cashmere funnel-neck cape with an embroidered sheath dress. She completes the simple, yet elegant look, by adding a pair of leather gloves, nude pumps, and an Akris horsehair Anouk clutch.

Gone are the long blonde tresses and in is a much more confident-looking Princess Charlene.  She debuted her new short crop at the Les Devens Leisure Centre in Monaco wearing an olive green shawl layered over a matching shift dress. Again, note how the nude pumps elongate her legs.

More often than not Princess Charlene is spotted in nude footwear, however for Queen Elizabeth’s Jubilee lunch at  Windsor Castle in May, she opted for heels that matched her pastel seafoam skirt suit. The only neutral accessory this time was the tan perforated top-handle bag she carried.

Attending the Christian Dior Fall/Winter 2012/13 Fashion Couture Fashion Show during Paris Fashion Week, Princess Charlene wore a pale pink shift.

Princess Charlene with husband Prince Albert II attends the Formula One Monaco Grand Prix Championship in Monaco in May and shows her “fun, sophisticated” side as she sports a shift dress by Akris with a speeding race car motif.

A few days later, the the royal pair attends the Amber Lounge Fashion Show in Monaco.  Princess Charlene once again shows that monochromatic is definitely not boring in her sheer and pleated frock from Albert Kriemler’s Spring 2012 Collection.

Princess Charlene’s Fashion Rules:

1.  Monochromatic color themes are elegant, not boring.

2.  Nude pumps are the perfect go-to shoes.

3.  As a general rule (and do remember, rules are made to be broken), the purse, gloves, and shoes should either be neutral-colored or match the color of the outfit.

4.  Classic dressing is not always predictable, there is always room for fun surprises.
